The average person experiences downfalls, accomplishments, trials, tribulations, love, and hate but it all contributes to who we become.  Whether good or bad we eventually learn who we are, and for some of us, who we are becoming.  These life altering events impact our choices in religion, hobbies, careers, talents, abilities, style, and etc. so much we create individual ways to express that newly emerged person.
